The post 4 Reasons Why the Medical Industry Uses Viton O-Rings for Sealing Applications first appeared on Gasketech/Tucks Industrial Packings & Seals Pty Ltd.

O-rings, also known as gaskets or washers, are mechanical sealing components that can remove the gap between two or more mating surfaces. The primary purpose of these components is to prevent leaks among objects while they are being utilised.

Many materials can be used in manufacturing O-gaskets. These materials include nitrile, neoprene, and ethylene propylene. Nitrile is often picked due to its resistance to silicone greases, hydraulic fluids, water, alcohols, and petroleum-based oils and fuels. Neoprene, alternatively, has moderate resistance to weather, a low compression set, and good resilience. Ethylene propylene, ultimately, has excellent resistance to water, steam, heat, alkali, ozone, mild acidic and oxygenated solvents, and sunlight.

While these materials can truly benefit many industries, one O-ring material that works well with medical sealing applications is Viton. Viton O-rings, which are made from fluorocarbon compounds, are being utilised by the medical industry due to the following reasons.

Exceptional Chemical Resistance

One of the reasons Viton O-rings are being maximised by the medical industry is they have superb chemical resistance. Many applications in the medical industry revolve around harsh chemicals, gases, and solutions, which can be damaging to many materials. Fortunately, Viton O-rings have excellent resistance to oils, acids, silicone fluids, glucose, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Their capability to withstand the effects of these elements makes them perfect for sealing various medical equipment and tools.

Reliable Temperature Resistance

Another reason Viton O-rings are utilised by many medical businesses is they have reliable resistance to high temperatures. Viton itself can easily withstand temperatures ranging from -25 to 230 degrees Celsius without compromising its shape, flexibility, and mechanical properties. So, once used as the O-ring material, the medical industry can effectively attain and maximise dependable sealing materials during their high-temperature operations. Their resistance to extreme temperatures likewise makes them long-lasting and valuable.

Great Resistance to Compression

The resistance quality of Viton O-rings does not end with chemicals and temperatures. Medical sealing applications can also benefit from these gaskets since they can remain strong even under pressure and compression. Other gasket types like rubber tend to become brittle in the long run, especially if they are being utilised in applications that are always under pressure. Viton O-rings, alternatively, can resist compression regardless of the environment, preventing them from getting brittle or obtaining cracks.

Compliant with Industry Standards

One more reason why Viton O-rings are preferred by the medical industry for their sealing applications is they comply with industry standards. As long as they are generated by reliable manufacturers, Viton O-rings are expected to meet the strict sanitary standards of the regulatory authority. Some provisions of the standards include the manufacture of the gaskets in a cleanroom. They must also be quality tested and packaged properly to prevent contamination. With high-quality Viton O-rings, the industry can carry out its applications easily.

Viton O-rings can be effective in sealing leaks, valves, pumps, and other similar medical-grade tools and elements. To obtain these gaskets, you can contact us at Gasketech.

Sealing products such as gaskets, washers, and others are extremely useful in ensuring that products intended to be combined fully will not leak throughout their service life. These sealing products can also help them sustain adequate pressure at their connection points.

To make sure that these sealing products can be useful for various industries, they must be made from effective materials. As more sealing products are utilised by different industries today, more and more materials have been created and produced just to meet specific application requirements. One popular material that can be utilised in creating sealing products is the vulcanised fibre.

Vulcanised fibre is a material that combines heat-treated fibrous materials to generate a sturdy rubber material. Some of the fibrous materials that can be used for this material are wood pulp, paper, and cotton. Opting for vulcanised fibre seals over others can bring you the following benefits:

Guaranteed Durability

One of the benefits of vulcanised fibre seals is that they are durable. Going for vulcanised fibre seals instead of the others can bring you products that will not break, tear, or splinter easily. Their ability to withstand these damaging forces can be attributed to their high strength-to-weight ratio, which cannot be found in other materials. Their excellent strength-to-weight ratio also allows these sealing products to be machinable without expecting any issues.

Chemical Resistance

Another quality of vulcanised fibre seals that makes them more recommended than the others is their chemical resistance. Sealing products are often maximised in applications that are exposed to harsh chemicals and compounds. If the sealing products cannot handle them effectively, they will only get destroyed in just a short time. Using vulcanised fibre sealing products for your application, on the other hand, enables you to fully utilise chemical solvents, oil, and grease.

Impressive Versatility

Vulcanised fibre seals can also be great for your intended applications as they are known to be versatile. Different vulcanised fibre variations can be generated and formulated to ensure that they could fit any applications. Commercial grade vulcanised fibres can be utilised to create gaskets, gears, and washers, which can be perfect for automotive, electrical, and power industries.

Environmentally Friendly

Choosing vulcanised fibre seals over others can be great for you since they are environmentally friendly. One thing about other sealing materials is that they are made from elements that pose danger to the environment. If you are leaning towards sustainability, opting for other sealing materials will not help you achieve your goals. Going for vulcanised fibre sealing products, on the other hand, can make your application eco-friendly as they do not maximise artificial binding agents and harsh chemicals.

Huge Cost Savings

One more other quality that makes vulcanised fibre sealing products better than the others is they can yield huge cost savings. Compared to other sealing materials, vulcanised fibre sealing products can be manufactured and processed without spending too much money. Even the time needed to generate these products is expected to be shorter than the others. With vulcanised fibre seals, you can surely save a lot of money, time, and other significant resources.

Numerous industries have been maximising different types of sealers for machines and other types of assembly. For instance, an O-ring is a mechanical gasket designed to be seated in a groove and compressed during assembly of two or more parts. Another example of a sealer is a washer, which is often used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener or serve as a spacer.

After repetitive use of a machine or parts, the seal used for them might fail due to different reasons. One, you should consider finding the root cause of the seal failure. Some factors that you may consider when starting a failure analysis include the hardware information, the way a seal is installed, application conditions, and the lifespan of the seal.

With the mentioned factors, your failure analysis will be much easier than ever before. Through the following basic failure diagnostics, you can easily reduce downtime and costly seal replacements.

Compression Set

The compression set of every material varies depending on its properties, lifespan and surrounding temperature. For seals, compression is defined as their ability to return to their original shape after the force applied to them is removed. If the seal has zero percent compression set, then it indicates that no permanent deformation has occurred. Meanwhile, a 100% compression set means that the seal no longer applies a force on the mating surface. Altogether, a compound with a low percentage of compression set means that the material is more resilient.

There are numerous potential factors that can affect the compression set of a compound. These factors include poor material properties, improper glands, fluid incompatibility, and higher than recommended temperature exposure for the material.

Extrusion and Nibbling

While the compression set is directly affected by the material properties and the surrounding environment, the occurrence of extrusion and nibbling shares a different story. This failure mode happens whenever a seal material deforms into the space between the bore and the outside of the tube, which can be referred to as the extrusion gap. It can also occur due to gland overfill. Gland overfill happens when the deformation from the seal compression fills the entire groove and then lips over into the extrusion gap.

The absence of extrusion gap on face seals makes them safe from the risk of this failure mode. On the other hand, radial seals can experience extrusion. Fortunately, the extrusion in radial seals can be remedied by reducing the clearance gap or by adding a back-up ring.

A lot of factors can affect seal extrusion damage. These factors include the magnitude of the differential pressure, radial extrusion gap clearance, defects at the extrusion gap corner, temperature, hydraulic pressure shock, and many more.

Spiral Failure

When an O-Ring is sliding and rolling in the groove, then it experiences spiral failure. This failure is often found on long stroke hydraulic piston seals and rod seals. Most of the time, this occurs in dynamic reciprocating O-Ring applications. The installation of O-Ring can also cause spiral failure right away. The root cause of spiral failure can be difficult to pinpoint. However, some factors that contribute to spiral failure include uneven surface finish, poor lubrication, side loading, eccentricity, improper installation, and many more. When spiral failure occurs, a series of deep spiral cuts will be present on the surface of the seal.

Knowing this basic failure diagnostics can help you determine and prevent impending seal failure ahead of time. To know more about seal failures, you can visit us at Gasketech. We manufacture and supply gaskets and sealing washers, extrusions, and mouldings for all industries.

The post Reduce Downtime and Costly Seal Replacements with this Basic Failure Diagnostics first appeared on Gasketech/Tucks Industrial Packings & Seals Pty Ltd.

Clear differences divide gaskets and conventional washers. The former item uses strong materials to mechanically seal flanges. As for the latter item, washers are typically used to spread fastener loads and to counteract vibrations. That's good to know, except sealing washers, the subject of this post, don't quite fit into that latter category. No, this washer family shares gasketing features, but they're not gaskets.

Reviewing Gasket Roles

A gasket is carefully placed around an opening of some type. Whether the perimeter of that opening is in an engine block or the flanges of a pressurised pipe, the seal fulfils its role as a fluid constraining device. The loop of circular or shaped material can be manufactured from some durable elastomeric material, from metal, or even from a combination of the two, but its role is still very clear. Compressive loads bear down on the seal, the material endures unimaginable fluid pressures, and that's the job done. Sealing washers are different, even though they also possess fluid-stoppering talent.

Multipurpose Sealing Washers

Here's a washer family that also uses a malleable surface to constrain fluids, but that's just one of the several features we discover when using a sealing washer. In truth, they're composites. On top of the washer, a strong metal backing spreads fastener loads. Underneath that hardened ring, a second ring, perhaps made of EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) or Silicone, delivers face-sealing strength. They're structural accessories, which means they're capable of anchoring a surface while they also seal that same plated object. Beyond those two key product characteristics, sealing washers also use their synthetic rubber faces to attenuate vibrations.

Some Design Differences

Gaskets are clearly designed to endure high fluid pressures, plus they're known to assume countless geometrically complex profiles. Tough fibres and metals and synthetic rubbers are processed into layered rings, and those rings are compressed between pipe flanges. That's a standard gasket application, but then there are engine gaskets, hydraulic seals, and more. Sealing washers stick to a tried-and-trusted circular profile. However, they're partially exposed, so additional design parameters need attention. The alloy ring obviously must be tough and corrosion resistant, but what about the vibration and fluid stoppering rubber? Well, UV resistance is desirable here, as is ozone resistance and a general aptitude for staying strong when weather extremes push the sealing faces hard.

Gaskets differ from sealing washers in several ways. It's important to know those differences, to know which product is bound for which application. Stronger by nature, gaskets seal pipe flanges, mechanical housings, and more. They're strong and durable, but that's their sole purpose. Sealing washers are fastener accessories, plus they provide fluid sealing strength and a feature that addresses mechanical vibrations.

The post How Do Gaskets Differ from Sealing Washers? first appeared on Gasketech/Tucks Industrial Packings & Seals Pty Ltd.
